November weather

Didn't I complain about the cold weather for all of October? Our weather would be just fine if the November temperatures had been here in October. Most days so far in November have been in the upper 40's with no snow. We non-hunters like the no snow!

When I was a kid.... there was always, always, snow for hunting season. The temperatures were cool enough that those hunters lucky enough to get a deer didn't need to process it right away.

Portage Lift Bridge

This is the Portage Lift Bridge as seen from the top of Quincy Hill. The Portage Canal is not much wider than a river, probably less so than some rivers. You might notice the historic building on the left. That is the Houghton County Courthouse.

Click on the link above for some interesting history on the Bridge.

Sign of the Season.

What is it you say? Deer feed. You'll find corn, carrots, rutabaga, apples, and sugar beets. There is no shortage, every gas station or store has a large supply. I'm told the deer are very fussy this year. They'll eat some apples and leave others. They've been fed too well.

Quincy Mine Hoist

The Quincy Mine Shaft House can be seen from miles around. We can see it from Chassell and even L'Anse if conditions are right. Many times you will see it when the Copper County is featured or advertised. I thought this photo was a little different view until I visited their site.

The Quincy Mine is part of the Keweenaw National Historic Park.

Business Opportunity.

Interested in opening your own business in the Upper Peninsula? Here's a place to start. I can see a bookstore, flower shop, and coffee shop. What do you see?

Really.. it has to be hopeless. There must be better places than this to open a business. It makes me think of an old western movie. It doesn't look like it's ready to cave in does it. Maybe it needs some TLC.

That was different!

The phone call I got last night was different. It rang, I answered and was connected to a conference type call. It was US Congressman Bart Stupak's town meeting. People across the State were asking questions of the Congressman. Apparently I did not get connect at the beginning for the meeting.

It was rather neat. There was a poll in one part of the call. It asked what should Congress be focusing on. Press 1 for Health Care, Press 2 for jobs, Press 3 for reducing the deficit. There were supposed to be more polls but I was waiting for a different phone call and had to hang up. I'd already been on the phone over 20 minutes.

Did you get a call? I'll bet most of you would have hung up without even listening. I normally would.

Love the Reflections

Are you hoping for snow so I'll have some different pictures? It's just fine with me to take pictures of reflections. Reflections are much prettier than ice fishing tents!

Michigamme

The shops in Michigamme aren't far off of US 41, just a few blocks in fact. It's worth the stop but they are only open on the weekend in November/December and not again until spring.

No, it's no longer a functioning church. It's a charming craft store.

Woman's Week..

We women are free to play when the men are away. This is Michigamme. I love the Crock and Rocker. It's loaded with great gift and speciality items. Allow at least an hour to browse.

Opening Day

Yes, there are bucks in the woods. This is proof for all those hunters in Yooperland who haven't seen one. And no, I'm not telling where these photos were taken.

The sports camera is the new way to hunt. It's not safe to go walking in the woods anytime.. Sports cameras are everywhere, all year round. You may end up on America's Funniest Home videos or on the internet.

Happy Hunting!! Be safe.

Hunter's Widow Saturday

What do we women do when our hunter husbands go to the deer camp? At least those of us who don't hunt. We go shopping.

Hunting season doesn't start until Sunday but the men head to deer camp on Friday or maybe Saturday. Why not, it's the weekend. They will get their visiting and partying out of the way before the season actually begins. Maybe.

Pat, Mick, and I spent a leisurely day in Marquette. We had a very enjoyable lunch at the Vierling Restaurant 7 Brewery. The Vierling is a historic, 1880's, full service restaurant and micro-brewery. It has been a focal point in downtown Marquette for over 100 years. It's now restored to old world elegance with historic details, an antique oak bar, prints and paintings, and it provides a view of Marquette lower harbor. They serve homemade desserts, meals cooked from scratch, fresh Lake Superior fish and micro-brewed beer. We all agreed that lunch was excellent. The question was, if the Vierling has been around for 100 years, why did it take us so long to try it.

Friday the 13th.

Is it just another day? I've never been very suspicious but I always start the day a little cautious. To be truthful, the number 13 is sometimes a lucky number for me. Let's hope it holds true today.

Let me know how your Friday the 13Th is/was. Any mishaps? Any luck?

St. Peter Cathedral

St. Peter Cathedral in Marquette takes a nice picture. Oh.. did you want me to go inside? Sorry, I never thought of it until I went to post the picture. Next time.

St. Peter Cathedral is a Roman Catholic parish of the Latin Rite, dedicated by Bishop Baraga in 1866.

This house in Marquette had a lot of character and charm. I hope the owners don't mind the picture. The downtown area of Marquette is living up to it's, "Cool City," title.

Gray Day

Everyone waits for a bright sunny day to take pictures. In the UP you could wait for a long time. I like these photos taken on a dull dreary day. The pictures were taken in Three Lakes. I believe this is Lake Ruth.

Magic Morning

The title, "Magic Morning," is from the Pure Michigan advertisement. It truly is a Magic Michigan Morning in this shot. I only wish the photo was clearer.

Christmas decorations.

The weather in November has been nicer than October. That's good and it's bad. It's bad because the guys are waiting for the snow for deer season. It used to be just firearms deer season, now it's bow season too.

The good side of warmer weather, we like it. We can finish up on putting all the outdoor things away, cover a few shrubs, clear the leaves, wash the car, and put up the outdoor Christmas decorations.

Dave has been busy putting up our Christmas decorations. He had to, he's going to the deer came on Friday and there could be 2 feet of snow before he has time again. Deer season is two weeks long and things change a lot in two weeks.

Before I forget.. Just because the decorations are up doesn't mean we turn them on. That doesn't happen until the first week in December. That time enough.

Boring..

It must be a boring time of year of yoopers. Everyone seems to be spending lots of time on Facebook. I can't find a thing to blog about. On Facebook they are playing Bejeweled!! Don't start, it's very addicting. I know, I'm have withdrawal problems. I'm working on that though, I've now started a farm on Farmville via Facebook and a Cafe on Cafe World. All are a waste of time but I had to see how they worked. Now I know so I can quit.. as soon as I get to the next level.

So what I'm thinking is, lets all meet at the corner and go for a walk before it's too cold and snow to go out.

Beauty in the branches.

We don't often stop to look at a tree when all the leaves are gone and there is nothing to see but the branches. It's worth a look.

Not leaves.

This crab apple tree still has all of it's apples but none of it's leaves. From a distance it looks like all leaves.

Link.

Did you get here through my "yooperpage" link? My original web page created many, many years ago was on Geocities. Geocities has been part of Yahoo for about two years. Yahoo has not eliminated Geocities so now I am under a Yahoo Small Business Plan. I have my own domain name. http://yooperpage.com or http://www.yooperpage.com.

Nothing stays the same on the Internet. I had a page with a journal much like a blog long before there were blogs. I'll bet you don't even remember what it was like when there were no blogs or facebook or my space. I do. I had the Internet when dial-up was all there was.

I can't keep up. I'm too old for this stuff.

Can anyone tell me why the word internet is always capitolized.. or at least it is if you use spell check.

NO, NO, not yet!

This picture is several years old! It is not new. I just wanted to remind all of you that the weather could get worse. It was taken on November 16, 2005. (I think)

I can't find much to blog about. Everyone is staying home in fear of the flu.

Shoo the Flu

Never in my life do I remember a time when so many schools were closed due to the flu. Baraga schools closed until at least Wednesday. Many of the schools across the western UP are closed for the remainder of the week. Imagine that. Imagine scrambling for day care and all the other problem school closing causes. The kids aren't going to be happy if they have to make up these days in June.

I've also heard the Northern Michigan University has considered closing. I hope they make those days up if they do. College kids don't seem to get their money worth of education. They are alway off on break.

I haven't heard of too many people in our area getting an H1N1 shot. By the time the vacine gets here all of our children will have had the flu. The regular seasonal flu shot have been given in record numbers, but as for the H1N1, we are still waiting.

Turning the page

It's November 1, 2009..

November 1st, a day/night we caught an extra hour of sleep. It was nice to wake to a little light. I still was up before the sun rose but at least the sky was beginning to lighten.

The leaves are all off the trees, it looks very dreary. It wasn't a very pretty fall in our area. The leaves turned late, some didn't turn at all. They just stuck to the trees until the 50 mile an hour wind on Friday. It was enough to blow us all to Canada.

There is no snow on the ground this November 1st and that is as it should be. We don't need snow this early. We've had snow but not the staying kind. No one wants snow until the middle of the month when firearms deer season begins. That's the next big event in our area. DEER SEASON.
